Some don’t find the noise a problem, but other dogs find the whole experience to be terrifying the stressful. So here are a few tips from Go Paws Up to make this bonfire night as enjoyable as possible for both owner and dog.
Keeping Your Dog Comfortable
Many dogs that are stressed like to find a safe dark place that they can tough out bonfire night. This could be their covered crate or basket, but it can also be behind the sofa our in the bathroom. Wherever you dog decides make sure that place is comfortable for them, put their favourite blanket and toy with them and just let your dog take itself off. It is very important that you make sure fresh water is available at all times for your dog, as stress and anxiety cane make them very thirsty.
Constant Noise
Now it may sound counter productive to have your television or radio on louder than you would do usually. But the main problem with fireworks are the intermittent loud bangs. They scare your dog as they are not expecting it. So having the television and/or radio on louder to drown out the sudden bangs of the fireworks.
Sprays and wraps
Anti-anxiety coats work really well for some dogs, it can relieve stress and tension, leaving them feeling safe and secure. If that doesn’t work you can also consider calming sprays and plug-ins. These release calming pheromones throughout the home to help your dog feel relaxed.
Toys to Distract and Entertain
If your dog loves to play tug of war, fetch or simply loves to chew their favourite toy. This can be the best distraction for your stressed dog.
These are just a few tips to help your dog during the bonfire festivities, if you are leaving your dog for the evening, make sure they are as relaxed as possible in a safe place with some of their favourite toys and blankets.
